Here is a description of each of the coves to visit:
1. Cueva de las Calaveras (Benidoleig)
The Cueva de las Calaveras (Cave of the Skulls) is a cave with more than 900 metres long, which owes its name to a speleological expedition carried out in the 17th century, where the remains of twelve people were found inside.
The cave has high ceilings and is divided into a 500 metres flooded area and a 400 metres dry area, which is available for the public. Among many other things, during the tour you can see stalactites, stalagmites, beautiful domes of more than 20 m high and fossils and remains of bones.
2. Cueva del Canelobre (L’Atzúbia)
This cave is a perfect example of a small underground corner that hides valuable natural treasures that will make your visit a great tourist experience.
The Adsubia cave is 80 metres long and has a drop of 15 metres. Despite its small proportions, there are important groups of numerous and varied stalagmites and stalactites that can be seen in a spectacular 600 square metres room. The tour begins through a small corridor that gives access to the interior of this room, with a gradual slope to the bottom of the cavity. At this point, a platform provides a close-up view of the abundant speleothems. On the way back, there is an alternative stepped route that climbs up the slope of the chamber to a new viewpoint in the central part. The visit lasts 30 minutes and is suitable for everyone.
Horario: hay que concertar cita con el Ayuntamiento
3. Cueva del Rull
It was discovered in 1919 by José Vicente Mengual (Uncle Rull). On a hunting trip with his dog chasing a rabbit, the latter entered a hole, into which he also got a ferret to make it come out. The next day he tried to get some stones out of the hole and found the cave, which still bears his nickname today. In the 1960s, due to the boom in tourism, "Uncle Rull" decided to open it to the public. It is currently owned by the Town Hall, and has been open since 16th September 1995.
It is a cave of stalactites and stalagmites with whimsical formations of different colours.
