The locality of Benidoleig is located some 125 metres above sea level in La Marina Alta region, in the north of the province of Alicante.
Benidoleig, meaning sons or descendants of the Doleig, was originally one of the many Arab farmsteads that settled in the Girona river valley.
Faithfull to its origins, it is an agricultural village that is historically based on dry farming and the production of sultanas. Nowadays, it stands out for the production of citrus fruits, especially its great variety of oranges, which occupy the 90 percent of the total cultivated area.
In the town centre, which covers 7,48 km2, you find great attractions, such as the Casa Señorial del Barón de Finestrat or the Sangre de Cristo Parish Church. Nearby we also find the Cueva de las Calaveras (Cave of the Skulls) and the Sender del Seguili (PR-CV445), an inmersion into the magic of the former rural world.
The patron saint holidays are held in the first week of August in honour of Santa Bárbara, the Inmaculada Concepción and the Santísima Sangre.
On the San Vicente Ferrer’s Day, exactly one week after the Easter Monday, the taditional “Fireta y Porrat de San Vicente” is celebrated. This festivity is dedicated to the most universal of all Valencian Saints, in which locals and visitors enjoy different performances and workshops in the Cueva de las Calaveras.
