Already in the thirties authors like Hemingway used to spend their summers in Calpe. The first hotel establishment was set up next to the Peñon de Ifach: the Parador de Ifach. The Morro del Toix and the Peñon de Ifach are the extremes of the bay of Calp. The Peñon de Ifach, “nord” in the Phoenician language, is one of the symbols of Calp and, by extension, of the Costa Blanca. It is the highest cliff in the whole of the Mediterranean and divides the Calpe coastline in two. Its 332-metre high limestone mass juts 1 km into the sea, forming a geological feature of the first magnitude. Its Parc Natural since 1987 keeps inside unique ecologic richnesses, like the carnation of Ifach. A Natural Park since 1987, it contains unique ecological riches such as the Ifach carnation. It is possible to climb to the summit by means of controlled visits in which the richness of Calp's fauna and botany is explained in detail in the Aula de la Naturaleza. From the summit you have one of the best views of the entire Costa Blanca. Calp has 11 km of coastline from Les Bassetes, passing by the Peñon, until the Morro de Toix, and beaches like the Levante or the Arenal, with tiny beaches (calas) like La Manzanera, where three buildings designed by Ricardo Bofill, or Les Urques, where you can go scuva diving or fishing. The Cueva dels Coloms, in the Morro de Toix overlooking Altea, is a freshwater cave that can only be accessed from the sea.
