A small village located 93 metres above sea level, next to the Segària mountain range and an extension of 3,50 km2. With its more minimalist and hidden peculiarities, Benimeli's main interest lies in the steep, whitewashed streets that climb up towards the mountain range.
Like any town in Alicante, Benimeli has an excellent gastronomy based on the appreciated Mediterranean diet, which combines sea and mountain elements with the olive oil.
Among its typical dishes we highlight the arròs al forn (oven-cooked rice), espencat (smoky grilled vegetables), fregit (fried aubergines and pepper with tomatoe), cocas (savoury cakes), arròs amb fesols i penques (rice with vegetables), etc. In particular, you can taste a paella and caldo de puchero (Valencian stew soup) and pilotes (meatballs); delicious desserts like the brazo gitano (Swiss roll), coca boba (sponge cake), buñuelos (sweet fritters), pastas navideñas (Christmas sweets), etc.
Benimeli has two bars where you can taste all these typical products among many others.
Throughout the year, Benimeli hosts numerous celebrations. The festivities in honour of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesus are held in June and the patron saint festivities are held in the third week of August (the week after 15th August) in honour of the Inmaculada Concepción and the Ecce-Homo. Also, the feast of San Andrés is celebrated on the last Sunday in November.
Benimeli also has its own cultural life, whose highlight is the Semana Cultural (Cultural Week) held in the last week of April or first week of May. During this week, exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, sports activities, and conferences are organised for all kinds of audience: children, young people, pensioners, farmers, etc.
