The first thing you notice when you approach Benissa is its white church, perfectly iluminated at night and which has been called Catedral de la Marina Alta. It was built in the “golden twenties” by labourers and pious sons of Benissa. You can walk through the village starting from the Town Hall, formerly the Hospital para los Pobres, where you can contemplate the maginificient citrus orchards, as well as the origin of the old path that the former “ribereños” (workers who emigrated from Benissa to harvest rice from the Valencian coast), used to take. Along Purísima street you can see the wrought iron grilles on the balconies full of flowers and the white houses with their coats of arms. These are normally narrow streets with little traffic which allow you to peacefully contemplate the town’s emblematic sites, like the Casa de la Cultura or the Lonja de Contratación, the oldest building in Benissa and where the Museo Etnográfico is located. Around the old prison the medieval heart of Benissa is located. The municipal term has not suffered a great deal of urban speculation, so their coastal areas of 4 km have small and humble beaches like La Fustera or the Cala Pinets, L’Advocat or the Cala Baladrar. Here you can go on a sea excursion or practise aquatic sports, such as scuva diving or fishing.
