Pego is a municipality with 10,000 inhabitants at the border of Valencia and Alicante province, 10 minutes far away from the beaches of Devesses in Dénia and Aigua Morta in Oliva.
The municipality of Pego is full of archaeological remains, which proves that men has lived in this valley since ancient times, benefiting from the mountains, the proximity of the Mediterranean and the abundance of water. In Ambra there are remains of Neolithic decorated and cardial pottery dating from between 4000-2000 BC.
The Romans left their mark in the Tossalet de Almela or Pujol, in the places of Bullentó, Castelló, Rupais and in the Tossalet de les Mondes. In 726, the Muslim occupation of the Pego valley took place. After the Muslim revolts were put down in 1286, Alfonso III designated the farmhouse of Uxola as the site for the future town. This is how settlers began to arrive from Barcelona and established themselves in our walled town.
This walled enclosure during the Christian era had three access gates, although only one remains standing: the Portal de Sala. Strolling through its charming streets you can contemplate the church of La Asunción and the chapel of Ecce-Homo, patron saint of the municipality, and the 18th century Casa de Cultura.
