El Ràfol d’Almúnia is the historical capital of this zone of the Marina Alta known as the Rectoria, formed by El Ràfol d’Almúnia, Benimeli, Sanet y Negrals, Sagra y Tormos. This name is due to the fact that in Ràfol d’Almúnia there was the only church of the five villages created in 1535 by the lord of the zone, the Marques of Almunia, to contrarrest the absolute Muslim population’s ascendence. El Ráfol de Almunia is a small village of 369 inhabitants dedicated mostly to the cultivation of citrus fruits, which is located in the sunny side of the Sierra Segaria mountain range.
