La Vall d’Ebo is a town located in one of the most rugged areas of the inland of the Marina Alta. The rich orography makes Vall d’Ebo one of the favourite villages for hiking and risk sports lovers.
The first documentation of settlements in La Vall D’Ebo date back to the superior paleolitic (1800-1500 B.C.). Proof of these dates are the archeological sites in the Cova del Reinós. In 1234 Jaime I conquers the lands then possessed by Al-Azraq. In 1609 with the expulsion of the Moorish the valley got deserted. Most of the new settlers mostly come from the Mallorca Islands. An example of this fact are the different surnames which currently keep their descendents, like Mengual, Frau or Llodrà.
In 1744 La Vall d’Ebo was formed by three villages: Villars, Serra and Benisual, which get the name of La Vall d’Ebo around 1814. The ruins of these municipalities can still be seen. Thousands of religious pieces of art were destroyed in our country during the Spanish Civil War. The Barroque-styled church used to keep a great number of canvas and pieces that were shattered during the convents and churches looting. Only the 17th century sculpture of the Virgen de los Desamparados from the Vergara school is preserved.
