Murla is a town with 500 inhabitants (2018), has an area of almost 6 square kilometres and is situated 283 metres above sea level. Within the Marina Alta region, it belongs to the sub-region of La Vall del Pop. It borders Alcalalí, Benigembla, Orba, Parcent and La Vall de Laguar.
It is a mountanious territory with the Seguili, the Castelet and the Peñasco de Laguar as the most noticeable heights. The most outstanding barranco is the Cotes, as well as the Xaló river basin.
Murla's economy is mainly based on agriculture. Nowadays, orange and almond trees are the main crops, as the grape, the muscatel variety, being the main crop in the past, has disappeared.
It stands out for being the cradle of the ‘pilota valenciana’ and has a dozen teams dedicated to this native sport of the Valencian Community.
Regarding the typical gastronomy of Murla you may find: borra (a characteristic vegetables stew in the province of Alicante), coca llimona (lemon sponge cake), espencat (smoky grilled vegetables), grinyons (stew with chickpeas, meat and vegetables), puchero (Valencian stew soup), pa perdut (fried slices of bread with sugar and cinnamon), pastissets de moniato (sweet potatoe cupcakes) paella, arroz al horno (oven-cooked rice), arròs amb fesols i naps (rice soup with beans and turnip), arròs amb fesols de la peladilla (rice with butter beans), monas (traditional Spanish Easter cake with a boiled egg in the middle), rollets (wine rolls) and cocas (savoury cakes).
The festivities take place in the first week of August and whose patron saints are the Divina Aurora, Santísimo Cristo del Salvador, San Miquel and San Sebastià.
